12/26/2012: Zombie

As I predicted several months ago, my Cartman mouse pad has brought about the zombie apocalypse! Snow zombies are rising from the ground hell bent on consuming our fresh delicious brains!

Anybody who has perused the Sky Mall catalog, that bastion of useless crap you don't need and didn't even know existed but now that you've seen it you've never wanted anything more, on a flight will likely recognize this guy. Yes, it's a garden zombie. Suitable yard decor for those of us with a twisted side.

I got a zombie for Christmas. What did you get?

12/6/2012: External Hard Drive

The main thing I like about this external hard drive (a Christmas gift from my older-younger brother last year) is the light on the side looks like a lightsaber.

11/8/2012: Salt & Pepper Shakers

These salt and pepper shakers sit on top of the fridge. I'm not much of a pepper user. Actually, I never put pepper on anything - chances are that same pepper will be in there 10 years from now. Most of the salt too, not much of a salter. I have these shakers primarily for family dinners. In fact, I think they may have been a gift from my parents.

10/24/2012: Black Vase

This black vase was a gift from my sister in law, I believe back when I'd just moved into the house. I've intended to get some of those long reed kind of things to put in it... but just can't bring myself to buy them.

10/7/2012: Darth Vader Gift Bag

This Darth Vader gift bag won't be mine much longer. Traditionally a friend of mine trade this bag back and forth on birthdays and for Christmas. I've gotten it half a dozen times now, maybe more. Whoever has the bag puts the others gift in it. And her birthday is today. Happy birthday Jill! I'll expect this back at Christmas. Or maybe next July.

Confession: The gift bag is on top of the shelves in the spare bedroom. The first pic I took showed how rarely (as in never) the top of the shelves had been dusted. So I dusted and retook the pic.

9/19/2012: Rattlesnake Figurine

A memento my parents brought back from their recent road trip west. My mom text me from Fort Cody (a favorite childhood stop on the way to visit family in Denver) and asked if I wanted anything. They always had these cool rattlesnakes encased in plastic so I replied I wanted one of those and my folds were kind enough to bring me this rattlesnake figurine.

8/2/2012: Hoth Beer Stein

I still have a few remnants displaying my inner geek around the house, this Hoth beer stein being one. It sits on to of the fridge next to my R2D2 pepper mill. I don't think I've ever actually had anything to drink out of it, but based on this pic I should probably run it through the dishwasher...

7/24/2012: Birthday Plate

Several years ago on this day Jennifer Lopez turned 40. As did I. This birthday plate commemorates the occasion, signed by those that joined me for the party. It also shows my reluctance to turn 40 (I'm sure J.Lo felt the same way) by referring to the day as my 20/20 birthday. I suppose if I was even more delusional I could've just called it my thirty-teenth birthday, but that seems to be pushing it.

7/22/2012: meh. T-Shirt

This meh. T-Shirt sums out my outlook on a myriad of different topics. The word gained popularity after being used in an episode of The Simpsons though the concept of meh can be a difficult one to explain to someone unfamiliar with it. Here is the best definition I found after Googling it and looking at 3 different results:

meh (mē')
1. (n.) A multi-purpose response, primarily used to imply a degree of indifference. Tone of voice and circumstance often implies a meaning. Can be used when you don't want to answer an awkward or embarrassing question, or if you just plain have nothing else to say, and you want the other person to interpret the "meh" however he/she chooses. As in: Q: "What do you think of my new dress?" A: "Meh." or Q: "What do you want to do tonight?" A: "Meh."

7/20/2012: Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock T-Shirt

This Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock T-Shirt was inspired by an episode of The Big Bang Theory. I'll let Sheldon and Raj explain it:

Raj: [Suggesting a way to determine which TV show to watch] I'll tell you what. How about we go rock-paper-scissors?

Sheldon: Ooh, I don't think so. Anecdotal evidence suggests that in the game of rock-paper-scissors, players familiar with each other will tie 75 to 80% of the time due to the limited number of outcomes. I suggest rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock.

Raj: What?

Sheldon: It's very simple. Scissors cuts paper. Paper covers rock. Rock crushes lizard. Lizard poisons Spock. Spock smashes scissors. Scissors decapitates lizard. Lizard eats paper. Paper disproves Spock. Spock vaporizes rock. And as it always has, rock crushes scissors.

6/26/2012: Cyclones Cap

If you ever want to see something that just looks wrong ask me to turn this Cyclone's cap (or any cap I happen to be wearing) around and wear it backwards. Most guys can pull that look off. I'm not most guys.

6/11/2012: Wrought Iron Cafe Set

This wrought iron cafe set isn't actually a set at all. I got the table at Target and the chairs are from my brother's bar - he stored them in my basement while the place was under construction, let me keep a couple as a storage fee.

5/29/2012: A+D Ointment.

As part of the basic care for my new ink (badasses such as myself often say "ink" instead of "tattoo," it's how you know they're badasses now that they're inked) I was instructed to regularly apply A+D Ointment to the area. Yes, the diaper rash stuff. Which is fine, keeps it from drying out and helps it heal faster. There's only two problems. First, this stuff must be delicious because as soon as apply it to the area of the tattoo the dog follows me around trying to lick it off my calf. And second, it makes my leg smell like a baby's butt after a diaper change.

5/25/2012: Don't Panic Towel

I received this Don't Panic towel as a gift, but not for my 42nd birthday (believe it or not). I wanted to post it today because May 25th is, as everyone knows, Towel Day. Why a day dedicated to towels? Well, as author Douglas Adams wrote in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a towel is just about the most massively useful thing found in the universe.

A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: nonhitchhiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, washcloth, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet-weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitchhiker might accidentally have “lost”. What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

3/16/2012: Ladder

"Mike, why does your ladder have a big red bow on it?" Because instead of a Lexus with a big red bow on it this Christmas I got a ladder. Which is perfect. You can't use a Lexus to climb up and take the Christmas lights down off the house. Which is something I should probably do this weekend. After I unwrap the ladder.

3/9/2012: Big Ass Elvis Coffee Cup

I don't know that I've ever actually used this big ass Elvis coffee cup to drink coffee out of, it's just a novelty souvenir my parents picked up for me when they stopped at Graceland. Though many mornings it looks tempting, I just don't want my coffee to get too cold before I finish it.

2/17/2012: Diecast Metal Millennium Falcon

This diecast metal Millennium Falcon was purchased for me by my grandmother a long long time ago. I'll say in 1978. She was visiting from New Jersey and took me to the toy store to pick out a gift for myself. Being a young boy in the late 70s I of course chose something Star Wars related. Birthday, Christmas, just for being awesome, I don't recall the exact reason for the gift but I do remember where we went. We went where every 9 year old in the Des Moines area wanted to go: Toys n More.

Ahhhh... Toys n More. I can still fondly recall their TV commercials (which I unfortunately had no luck locating on YouTube.) "Toys n more! Toys n MORE!!! TOY N MUCH MUCH MORE!!!" Looking back I don't really remember what the "more" was. It was pretty much just toys.

Fun sidenote: Had I never opened my Millennium Falcon I could sell it mint-in-box on eBay for roughly $1500.

2/2/2012: Chicago Bears Hardhat

Of course I didn't know it at the time, but this Chicago Bears hard hat my cousin got me as a birthday gift could be seen as foreshadowing for the shambles the Bears' season collapsed into after Cutler's season-ending thumb injury. This hat was a jinx. So really... it's all Dan's fault. Thanks a lot Dan. My only consolation is how much more Tampa sucked this year than the Bears.

1/29/2012: R2D2 Pepper Mill

This was a birthday (or Christmas?) gift from a friend not too long ago. I'm not much of a fresh ground pepper person, so my R2D2 pepper mill sits on top of my fridge. Now a little Jim Gaffigan on the subject of fresh ground pepper:

When you go out to dinner they always try and improve the salad. They’re like, “Would you like some fresh pepper on your salad?” Can anyone tell the difference between fresh and stale pepper? I can’t even taste the pepper. They might as well be like, “Would you like us to wave this wooden wand over your salad?”

“Uh, all right.”

“OK, enjoy your magic salad.”

“Ooh, I didn’t know I was getting a magic salad.”
